What is an LED shadow box?

A shadow box is a deep frame made for objects rather than flat pictures, with space between the front and the backboard for things that have thickness. An LED shadow box adds light inside that space. Without it, the top edge of a deep frame tends to cast a shadow over the contents; with LEDs built into the case, the contents are lit from inside, even when the room is dim.

Choosing a size

Start with the objects, not the frame. Lay everything out on a table and see how much space it wants.

Then check the depth. Measure the thickest item at its highest point, including any stand, clasp or ribbon loop, and make sure it sits comfortably inside the 2 in. Nothing should press against the acrylic when the front is closed. If a piece is too deep, Lumi Frames Jersey offers about 3 in of depth and a much larger display area.

Laying out the display

A good layout comes from trying it before anything is pinned.

1. Make a paper template. Cut a sheet of paper to the size of the backboard and arrange your items on it.
2. Place the main piece first. Put the largest or most meaningful item slightly above the middle, where the eye naturally lands.
3. Build around it. Add smaller pieces in loose groups, and leave some linen showing. A crowded box looks like storage; space makes it look curated.
4. Take a photo of the layout so you can copy it exactly onto the backboard.
5. Transfer the pieces one at a time, heaviest first. Pin through ribbons, loops and edges rather than through the face of anything you want to keep intact.
6. Close the front and switch on the light. Because the LEDs sit around the edges, a tall object can throw a shadow toward the center. If it falls across a flat item, nudge the two apart.

The hinged front means you can open the box and adjust a piece without taking it off the wall, so a layout can change as new keepsakes arrive.

Setting the light

The box tunes from 2700 K warm white to 6500 K cool white, plus color modes, and dims from 1 to 100%.

• Warm white flatters paper, wood, fabric, dried flowers and older heirlooms.
• Neutral to cool white makes silver medals, chrome and bright plastic look crisp.
• Color modes suit toys and collectibles, but they change how every object’s own color reads. For anything you want to see as it really is, stay with white.
• Keep it low for fragile pieces. Dyed fabric, color photos, felt-tip ink and pressed flowers fade faster than most keepsakes, so a dim setting and fewer hours lit help them last.
